Israel's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published last week its 2005 report indicating an 8% drop in cargo moving through Ben Gurion airport, compared to 2004

The relatively large drop is attributed to the increase in jet fuel as well as to the switch to the cheaper alternative, maritime transport.

The combined share of El Al and CAL, the two main air carriers, was down last year to 66.7%.( El Al market share was 46.3%, up from 45.8% in 2004,  CAL's market share was down to 20.1% compared to 23.7% in 2004).

Total cargo, excluding postal cargo, moved through the airport was 305,000 tons, two thirds of which was flown in 4,095 cargo flights.

The main overseas airports serving Israel's air cargo market were Amsterdam, Luxemburg and New York extensively used by El Al and Leige served by CAL.

The report noted that the decision made in 2004 by the ministry of transport to allow cargo be flown on board passenger chartered aircraft, brought about a marginal increase in capacity. Only 450 tons of cargo were flown on such flights out of Israel in 2005.

Total value of cargo moved by air in 2005 constitute 25% of Israel's total foreign trade.
