Press release issued by the Civil Aviation Authority ( CAA ) shows that during the first half of 2004 cargo movements at Ben-Gurion airport increased by 11% compared to same period last year.
In the first six months 173,000 tons of cargo were handled compared to 156,000 last year. Exports was up and registered 12% growth while imports was up by 9%.
The two main cargo carriers EL AL & CAL, whose market share during the period was 75.6%, registered 11% growth in freight.
According to the CAA the growth was due to increase in perishables exports as well as large movements of freight from the Far East.
In addition to EL AL & CAL which offer schedule freight flights, two foreign airlines Fedex & MNG offer similar freight service.
All freight flights operates between Israel and six international gateways : Amsterdam. New York, Munich, Istanbul. Athens and Liege.
