Air traffic at Ben Gurion Airport halted due to fuel contamination

Airlines were instructed to refuel at Larnaca in Cyprus or other nearby airports. Tests are being carried out in order to find the source of the fuel contamination

Fuel contamination halted last Friday all aircraft re-fueling at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion InternationalAirport and aircraft that re-fueled at the airport have been grounded. The contamination was discovered on Thursday at around midday local time.

Airport manager Shmuel Kendel ordered an immediate stop to refueling when the company supplying fuel detected the contamination.

Airlines were instructed to refuel at Larnaca in Cyprus or other nearby airports. All domestic flights and some international flights that were refueled at Ben Gurion before the problem was detected have been grounded.

The Israeli Airport Authority said that tests are being carried out in order to find the source of the fuel contamination.

El Al said it canceled some 20 flights Thursday and provided full refunds to passengers. Israel Airports Authority spokesman Adar Avisar said Thursday the cause of the contamination remains unknown, but that it was spotted before any planes could take off with contaminated fuel.

The Israel Airport Authority has launched an investigation into the matter. National Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau has formed a ministerial commission of inquiry to investigate as well. The committee will be headed by the Ministry's fuel supervisor Chen Bar-Yosef. Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz order an inquiry into the matter as well, to be headed by Ministry Director-General Dan Harel.
