El Al major shareholder: company must operate Saturday flights

Izzy Borovich, majority shareholder in the Israeli flag carrier, who has no active position in the airline, said last week that El Al has no option but to reconsider its policy and offer Saturday flights.

El Al in principle offers only kosher in-flight meals and does not fly passengers on the Jewish Sabbath or religious holidays.

Borovich was quoted saying that "El Al must fly on the Sabbath, because there is no other way to survive in the world of global aviation".

The airline does not offer Saturday flights, in line with Jewish religious precepts prohibiting travel on the Sabbath, the weekly day of rest. Borovich added that the company has to change it's culture "We must change El Al's corporate culture, changing this is the most important thing."

Borovich owns 17% of Knafaim Holdings Ltd. which owns the 39.3% controlling interest in El Al.
