Ryanair sees Israel as potential new market

Michael Cawley, Ryanair deputy CEO, noted last week that the company is seriously considering Israel as a potential new market.

Foreign press reports say that the Dublin-based Ryanair, Europe's top low-cost airline, wants to fly to Tel Aviv, but accuses the Israeli government of keeping airport costs high to protect El Al Israel Airlines Ltd.

Cawley noted that, "Israel has phenomenal potential." Even though leisure travel to Israel has been quite modest and heavily related to religious tourism, he said it could expand rapidly. 'We want to open the market completely and allow El Al to compete'."

Cawley added that "The problem is that the Israeli government is trying to do two things that, in our view, are mutually impossible liberalizing their skies yet protecting El Al".
