The Israel Ports Company has announced that a consortium of Shapir Civil and Marine Engineering Ltd and Ashtrom Properties Ltd has won the tender for construction of the new port in Haifa- "Haifa Bay" port.
The centerpiece of the Haifa Bay port will be a 1,000-meter-long pier with a capacity for as much as 1.4 million containers annually.
The new terminal is to be built on land that will be reclaimed and will feature facilities that have been designed to handle EEE class vessels.
The consortium bid NIS 4 billion, overcoming its competitor, the Shikun u'Binui Holdings Ltd. - Ludreco consortium, which bid NIS 4.5 billion.
In 2013, the Port of Haifa handled around 1.35 million containers per year, with a current maximum handling capacity of TEU1.8m. The first stage of the new project will have a capacity of around TEU800,000 per year.
Besides the price, the Israel Ports Company's tender also took in account factors such as experience, quality, and adherence to timetables. At the same time, the price was assigned a weight of over 80%, giving Shapir-Ashtrom a major advantage in the tender.
