The Israel Airports Authority (IAA), reported last week that total cargo moved in August 2013 through Ben Gurion international airport was 22,711 tons, compared to 21,990 tons in August 2012, up 3.2%.

The IAA noted that despite the relatively small increase, the January – August figure there was a 4.95% drop in cargo moving through the airport, compared to the corresponding period last year.

The IAA also noted the drop in the share of cargo transported by passenger aircraft compared to the increase in cargo moving by freighters. During August, the passenger sector experienced 12.28% drop in cargo, compared to the corresponding period last year and 23.11% increase in cargo moved by freighters, compared to the corresponding period last year, (11,903 tons compared to 9,668 tons in 2012).

CAL which operate freighters has the largest market share with 33.72% followed by El Al 23.56% and LH 12.03%. El Al hold the largest market share in cargo moving by passenger aircraft. El Al carried 48.50% followed by Swiss with12.57% and United Airlines 7.95%.
