British Midland (bmi), the second-largest British carrier, announced last week it would start as from March 13th  2008 operating daily flights between London Heathrow and Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport.

British Midland will operate an Airbus A320 on the route, with a capacity of 20 seats in business and 108 seats in the economy class.

El Al Israel Airlines, Israel's national carrier, and British Airways already have numerous non-stop flights a day to and from London.  British Midland will be the second regular British airline on the route.

Following bmi announcement, Israel's Israir Airlines and Tourism Ltd said it had applied to the Ministry of Transport for designated carrier status on the Tel Aviv-London route. The airline currently operates four weekly charter flights to London, and says it can increase this to six.
