Reports in the USA indicate that Continental Airlines is in the final stages of a feasibility study of a Tel Aviv-San Francisco route, which could be launched by the end of 2011.

According to press release published last week, Continental's Tel Aviv-Newark flights are running at 95% occupancy, and the merger with United creates more possibilities of direct flights from Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion International Airport to international air travel hubs.

If the plan goes through, Continental would be the first airline to fly directly from Tel Aviv to San Francisco, a popular destination due to its closeness to Silicon Valley. Continental leads foreign airlines at Ben-Gurion Airport in terms of passenger numbers and is the airport's second-busiest after El Al.

Continental has not yet decided on details about the route, or when it might be launched. It will also have to decide what plane to use; the airline currently uses Boeing 777s on its Tel Aviv-Newark route.
