The two companies wish to begin code-sharing operations in early 2008. Upon approval of the code-sharing agreement passengers will have many more options to fly to/from Israel
Israel's flag carrier issued a press release last week informing that it had agreed with American Airlines to seek permission from US and Israeli governments to begin code-sharing operations from Israel to North America in early 2008.
In a separate statement issued by American Airlines in the US the company said it will apply to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for authorization to begin code-share operation with El Al Israel Airlines.
EL AL Israel Airlines President, Haim Romano, said following the signing of the agreement that: "We are proud to join forces with American Airlines, a company whose history, size and range of services speak for themselves,". He added that "The authorization of this EL AL code-sharing agreement with American Airlines will open up new horizons, create a wide range of possibilities, and enable EL AL passengers to fly with convenience and maximum flexibility between Israel and North America”.
American Airlines said that the application lodged with the DOT proposes that code-sharing operations begin on 1 February 2008. If the proposal is approved by the governments, the carrier would place its AA designator code on EL AL flights to Tel Aviv from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), Los Angeles, Miami and Newark.
In addition, American would also place its code on EL AL fights to Tel Aviv from London Heathrow, Paris, Madrid, Zurich and Rome.
Upon approval of the code-sharing agreement between the two airlines, EL AL and American Airlines passengers in North America will have many more options to fly to/from Israel, with added convenience and flexibility.
