El Al Airlines which announced several weeks ago that it was negotiating with Boeing and Airbus for new aircraft worth hundreds of millions of dollars, announced last week that its management decided to freeze the purchasing of new airplanes.

The decision was made due to what the company's spokesman referred to as: "difficulties in the negotiations with Boeing and Airbus".

It was made known that both Boeing and Airbus made it clear that new planes would be supplied to El Al on time only subject to the company's decision to place its new orders immediately.

Boeing sales director for Europe Jim Frank said earlier this month that the company was in talks with all three of Israel's airlines — El Al Israel Airlines, Israir and Arkia — for 787 purchases, "We are encouraging them to move quickly," Frank said, adding that an airline placing an order now might not receive the 787 before 2012.

In response, El Al directors decided to freeze all new aircraft orders. El Al added, however, that the company was still negotiating with both companies.
