El Al: fuel costs the reason for the increase in ticket prices

El Al Israel Airlines Ltd said last week that following increases in fuel costs it will increase flight ticket prices by $10-30 as of April 15. (fares for short-haul routes will rise by $10. Fares to destinations in Europe will increase by $16 while fares for long-haul routes will rise by $30).

El Al director of commerce Rami Levy explained that the renewed trend of rising fuel prices approaching peak prices of the summer of 2006 of $70 per barrel has forced the company to adjust its fares accordingly.

Levy added that change was minimal and that El Al's response to rising fuel rates was no different than that of other international airlines.

The company said later that it refrained from raising fares earlier this year as this is the peak period for holidaymakers to purchase package holiday deals at relatively lower prices.
