The planes would be supplied starting in 2012. The airline recently purchased two 777s which are used on flights to the United States and Asia
El Al Israel Airlines said last Wednesday it was negotiating to buy four new Boeing passenger jets, model 777-200. The planes would be supplied starting in 2012. El Al says it would have the option to buy 777-300s instead if it decides to do so by the end of this year.
The airline said no final agreement is expected after several weeks and is subject to approval of the executive board.
El Al operates an all Boeing fleet, including six 777 aircraft. It said the new 777s would be used on long-distance flights.
The airline recently purchased two 777s which are used on flights to the United States and Asia and said additional planes are needed to meet a growing demand of tourists to visit Israel.
In the summer of 2008, El Al is expected to take delivery of two Boeing 737-800 planes with another three arriving in 2009. The Israeli carrier said the acquisition of additional aircraft would improve its ability to compete with foreign airlines flying to Israel and would serve to meet rising demand for medium and long haul flights.
