El Al reported last week its board approved a contract with Boeing to purchase four new advanced-design 737-900ERs. The first of these aircraft is due for delivery at the end of 2013 with the final unit set to arrive in 2016.
 
The contract also allows purchasing two more similar aircraft that can be exchanged for optional purchases. El Al also received an option to purchase an additional two aircraft of this type.
 
El Al also said it acquired a 747-400 passenger aircraftduring the first quarter of 2011 that is expected to join its fleet next month.
 
CFO Nissim Malki said “the cost of the 747-400 was included in a US$37 million investment in fixed assets made in the quarter”. Two leased aircraft, a 767-300ER and a 737-800, were added to the fleet in the March quarter. The airline's operating fleet numbers 40 aircraft, 28 of which are owned.
