El Al Israel airlines and the US aircraft manufacturer Boeing Company signed last week an agreement for the purchase of two Boeing 777-200ER (ER- extended range) aircraft.
It is understood that the contract of both airlines valued at $362 million at list prices. Both aircraft, which will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 892 engines, are scheduled, according to Boeing, for delivery in 2007.
A statement by El Al president Haim Romano following the signing indicated that the new 777-200ERs will help El Al expand service to meet growing demand for air travel in the Israeli market.
Romano said: "The purchase of the 777- 200 ER's is in accordance with the company's business strategy to acquire wide-body long-range aircraft, in order to provide passengers the best possible service and product quality".
Both aircraft will supplement the existing fleet of four 777s operated by El Al on routes to New York and the Far East from Tel Aviv. It is understood that the new aircraft will serve new destinations in the U.S. and the Far East.
According to Boeing the twin-engine 777 is known to be the most fuel-efficient airplane in its category.
