The company has decided to stop its activity on the direct line to Miami as of September due to the rise in the flights' operational costs
El Al Israel Airlines said last Thursday it would halt direct flights from Tel Aviv to Miami starting in September as part of its plan to optimize flight operations.
El Al CEO Haim Romano said that "as part of the optimization of our flight lineup, the company has decided to stop its activity on the direct line to Miami as of September. The unprecedented leap in the prices of jet fuel entails a dramatic rise in the flights' operational costs, and particularly in long-range flights.
"This reality requires us to re-examine the economic viability of every single flight," Romano said in a statement. At current fuel prices and given the size of the market, the economic viability of the route to Miami has been eroded.
The company stressed, however, that the direct summer flights to Miami will continue as planned, and that the direct flights to the company's additional destinations in North America – New York, Los Angeles and Toronto – will be reinforced.
El Al Israel Airlines plans to strengthen its foothold in North America through its direct flights to New York, Los Angeles and Toronto as well as through its code-sharing agreement with AMR Corp's American Airlines.
