The era of paper tickets being issued for air travel in Israel is about to end. A ruling by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), that takes effect from May 31, mandates that every airline operating around the world cease issuing tickets in that form. Instead, they must be online with electronic ticketing.

As of June 1, all Israeli flights will use only electronic tickets, according to the Israeli branch of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which has started collecting all the existing paper tickets from travel agents.

The end of the printed ticket ushers in a new era for travellers in which the entire ticket purchase procedure is more secure, convenient, and it makes it possible to handle all arrangements from home. Passengers no longer have to go to a travel agency or ticketing office to collect a paper ticket.

IATA reckons that with 100% coverage the electronic ticketing system will save the industry USD 3 billion a year. According to the survey conducted by IATA, a paper ticket costs ten times more than an electronic ticket. A single e-ticket can result in savings of USD 9. Furthermore, by eliminating the paper ticket 50,000 mature trees will be saved each year. Electronic tickets cannot be lost or stolen, and they are easily replaced by e-mail or in a ticketing office. Tickets can also be modified over the phone because they do not have to be presented: all data on the ticket are immediately accessible by the traveller, the sales agent and the airline.
