The final report of the Lapidot Committee examining the state of Civil Aviation in Israel revealed some serious safety issues.

Among the main problems cited in Lapidot`s report were the poorly functioning Civil Aviation Authority and the anachronistic aviation laws in Israel.

Abraham Kimchi a Lapidot committee member said during a press conference that Ben Gurion International Airport is one of the world's worst airport and that an accident is only a matter of time.

The Lapidot committee is a joint Ministries of Defense and Transport committee set up to examine the safety of Israel's civil aviation.

Committee chairman former Air Force commander Major General (res.) Amos Lapidot accused the Ministry of Transport of flawed handling of aviation. He was particularly critical of Minister of Transport Shaul Mofaz.

The committee advised that immediate action be taken to solve the problems at Tel Aviv-Ben Gurion Airport.

The Civil Aviation Authority must be made into a strong body with the power and budget to properly oversee aviation safety. He reiterated the committee recommendation to remove the ICAA from the Ministry of Transport and have it answer directly to the minister.
