Lufthansa announced it is investing €60 million ($81 million) to increase its presence at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport

German flag carrier Lufthansa will, subject to Government approval, launch two weekly flights from Tel Aviv to Berlin next summer, to coincide with the opening of the city’s new Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER). The new airport will be Germany's third-largest once it opens its doors next year.

Lufthansa (LH) announced it is investing €60 million ($81 million) to increase its presence at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport. LH destinations from BER will increase from eight to 38 starting from summer 2012. New routes will include mostly European and two Middle East destinations. LH’s dedicated BER-based fleet will increase from nine to 15 A320 family aircraft.

The flights will commence on June 3, 2012, the service will be operated by two-class A320 aircraft.

The forthcoming Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt airport (an extension of the existing Schonefeld facility and named after former German Chancellor and Nobel Peace Laureate Willy Brandt) is creating several new opportunities for routes from Israel.

Karsten ZangIsraeli Lufthansa manager noted that Lufthansa and its group airlines will operate a total of 35 aircraft out of the new airport, offering more than 1,000 weekly flights to/from the German capital.
