Israel's Ministry of Transport announced last week the commencement of a pilot program which can identify civil aircraft willing to enter Israel's airspace as well as pilots under terrorists threats.
The new system was developed by Elbit as a consequence of the 9/11 events.
Several international airlines, including US, Canadaian, British, French and Ethiopian, take part in the pilot program which began last week and will end at the beginning of April.
In order to have an effective control over the new system the Security Department of the Ministry of Transport announced the establishment of a new Aviation Security Operation Center (ASOC). The ASOC provides a primary coordination point for the multiple security, defense civil aviation and government agencies involved in the implementation of security measures for arriving aircrafts into and through Israeli airspace. The ASOC serves as the command, control, communication and coordination point for the Ministry of Transport to gather information, gain situational awareness, and exercise control over the security procedures for the arrival of aircraft into and through Israeli airspace.
The new ASOC is equipped with advanced command communication and computing technology that will allow all the relevant security, defense, and civil aviation agencies, as well as airport and airlines to simultaneously communicate with the ASOC on daily basis and through security emergency satiations.
The ASOC functions as a 24/7 watch, employing a cadre of well trained and experienced operation officers who operate and maintain comprehensive watch capability in addition to processing all types of security permit applications for arrival of aircraft into and through Israeli airspace.
