The government has approved a proposal by Minister of Transport Israel Katz to plan and construct a new international airport at Timna, near Eilat.
The year-long planning is expected to cost NIS 56 million (US$14.4 million), while construction itself will cost some NIS 1.7 billion (US$440 million) and take three years to build.
When completed, the new airport will replace Eilat's current airport. The Timna airport will be located 18 kilometers north of Eilat. It will serve both international flights, mainly to and from Europe, as well as domestic flights. The planned airport willhave 3,600 meters long runway, control tower as well as new road system to the Red Sea city of Eilat.
