Ministry of Transport informed the airline industry last week that with immidiate effect all airlines categorized as noisy i.e.meeting stage three standard of noise will not be allowed to take off from Ben-Gurion International Airport between 23:00 and 06:00.
Ben-Gurion airport is generally closed to take offs between 02:00 and 05:30.
Planes categorized as 'quiet', i.e. meeting stage four standard of noise or less, would be allowed to take off from Ben-Gurion Airport at all hours.
The ministry noted that stage four airplanes are considered about 10 decibels quieter than the stage three standard noise.
The decision was made following a meeting held between Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz and Environment Minister Gideon Ezra.
Environment Minister Gideon Ezra said in a press release that the decision to spread out airlines departure times more evenly would put an end to takeoffs concentrated in the early morning hours and late afternoon hours.
He added that the average noise levels in communities residing near Ben-Gurion International Airport would decline as a result of the decision.
Stage three planes will not be allowed to take off between 11 P.M. and 6 P.M.
