Unofficial boycott by the ultra orthodox community (Haredi religious community) caused millions of dollars loss to El Al airline, a company representatives said.

According to reports in the ultra orthodox press the unofficial boycott has reached beyond the boundaries of the state of Israel. Continental Airlines said last Wednesday it has seen a rise in interest from ultra orthodox passengers.

Israel Airports Authority figures showed Continental flew 28,043 passengers on the route in November, 8.8% more than the parallel month last year. The dispute between El Al airline and the ultra-orthodox community began two weeks after El Al flew on the Sabbath, arguing that it was forced to do so on a one-time basis because a labor strike left thousands of travelers stranded at airports around the world.

The newspapers reported last week the cessation of talks between ultra-orthodox community representatives and El Al. They claim that the company refuses to sign a legally binding document promising to refrain from Sabbath flights. Dozens of ultra-orthodox travel agents met last week with religious leaders to discuss the issue.

Rabbi Yitzchak Goldknopf said negotiations with El Al could have reached positive conclusions but that the airline does not recognize that the orthodox public does not want to deal with a company that does not promise to observe the Sabbath.
