Hazera Genetics reports an increase in demand for Israeli tomatoes, which are sold on the shelf in Europe for a record price of 100 NIS per kilo
1 kilogram of tomato seeds by Hazera Genetics, a company specializing in breeding and marketing hybrid varieties of vegetable and field crops, was sold to growers in Europe for $350,000.
These yellow cherry tomato seeds, named Summer Sun, were developed by Hazera Geneticspart of the French-based global group Vilmorin Clause & Cie, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture at the Hebrew University. The color of these tomatoes is a warm yellow, and their high concentrations of sugar make honey sweet. Hazera Genetics reports an increase in demand for Israeli tomatoes, which are sold on the shelf in Europe for a record price of 100 NIS per kilo.
Summer Sun tomatoes are part of the product line marketed under the Hazera Boutique brand. This family of products includes a range of gourmet tomatoes that differ in size and shape, but share their superior flavor and high sugar levels.
Eran Shafrir, Hazera Genetics' Marketing Director, explains: "The growing demand for boutique tomatoes among European consumers has resulted in a record retail price of 100 NIS per kilo of tomatoes. Europeans are willing to pay, and pay generously for the unique taste of these tomatoes, that also offer health advantages such as high levels of Beta Carotene - an antioxidant that helps prevent disease".
Shafrir added: "Hazera Boutique tomatoes are branded products, and even in retail chains in Europe, are sold as a distinct product, separate from 'regular' tomatoes".
Hazera Genetics is one of the world's leading companies in the field of breeding, production and marketing of hybrid seeds for vegetables and field crops, specializing in advanced bio-technological research and development, worldwide distribution and agro-technical support.
The company, established over 65 years ago, is constantly developing new products that address market demands, including improved health and nutritional benefits, quality, especially high yields, year round availability, resistance to diseases and longer shelf life.
