Shlomo Tirosh announced his resignation after 16 years in the post. Tirosh diverted exports from air to sea trasport and chartered two new refrigerated ships
Shlomo Tirosh who serves as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the state-controlled agricultural export company Agrexco Agricultural Export, Israel's largest fresh produce exporter, announced last week his resignation after 16 years in the post.
Local sources say that the decision to quit was due to long-standing disagreements with Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon over the privatization of the company.
In 2008 the government decided to privatize Agrexco, but Tirosh feels that Agrexco, owned 50% by the state, 25% by the Israeli Production and Marketing Boards, and 25% by Tnuva, should remain under government control.
Tirosh will be remembered for successfully increasing Israel's export of fresh agri-produce as well as diverting fresh produce exports from air to sea transport. He initiated the chartering of two new refrigerated ships, the Carmel Bio-Top and Carmel Ecofresh, which entered service in February 2004, opening a new era for Agrexco Agricultural Export Co. in all matters relating to the shipping of agricultural produce.
