A study published last week by the Bank of Israel research department, titled “Commuting Patterns in Israel, 1991-2004”, found that on average, during the fourteen years period, 1991-2004: 43% of Israeli employees worked outside their local area of residence; 28% of employees were employed outside their residential sub-district.

The "Commuting Patterns" research also found strong similarity to other advanced western societies, Israeli men tend to commute more than women, and commuting rates are much higher among younger and more educated employees.

Another interesting point was found that only five sub-districts: Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Ramla, and Zefat- Kinneret, registered daily positive commuting balances, meaning that these five sub-districts had more people entering them to work, rather than leaving them for outside employment.
