The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) published on October 14th the Consumer Prices Index for September. Israel's CPI fell 0.2% in September from August to stand at 2.9% higher year-on-year.

 

The CBS noted that the Israeli consumer prices declined in September as public protests helped push down costs, bringing the annual inflation rate within the government’s target for the first time this year.

The CPI in September showed decreases in prices of food (-1.3%), fruits and vegetables (-5.3%), furniture (-0.5%), education, culture and entertainment (-0.9%) and telecoms and transportation (-0.2%), frozen vegetables ( -5.8%), and beverages, down 2.4%. Leisure and vacation item fell 3.1%. Fresh fruits slid 16.5%, while milk and dairy products dropped 4.3%.

The CBS noted that the September index was the second monthly decline in three months and came largely due to a drop in food prices following a wave of consumer protests over the summer against the high cost of living.

 

Inflation over the twelve months to September was 2.9%, which is within the government's price stability target range of 1-3%. Over the first three quarters of 2011, inflation totaled 2.2%.
