China has invited Israel to the World Expo scheduled in Shanghai in 2010. The event is considered the third most important international commercial and social event. The Chinese Government has formally invited 160 countries to participate.
In a statement issued early this year it was announced that the theme of the World Expo 2010 would be “Better City - Better Life”.
The World Expo is a large-scale, global, non-commercial Expo. The hosting of the World Expo must be applied for by a country and approved by the international World Expo committee. The Expo aims to promote the exchange of ideas and development of the world economy, culture, science and technology, to allow exhibitors to publicize and display their achievements and improve international relationships. Accordingly, the World Expo with its 150-year history is regarded as the Olympic Games of the economy, science and technology.
The invitation was made to members of the Israel-China Parliamentary Friendship Society during a visit to China last week. Israel has not yet responded to the invitation. Knesset Member Danny Yatom, who was one of several officials who received the invitation welcomed the opportunity for Israel to participate.
10,000 square meters of exhibition space has been allocated to the Israeli pavilion. The minimum participation fee is $8 million per country.
