Shine commented on the upcoming World Diamond Congress. Announced the DTC will send a large delegation headed by De Beers’ Chairman
At a media briefing held at the Israel Diamond Exchange, Ms. Varda Shine, the managing director of the London-based Diamond Trading Company (DTC), announced the DTC would be sending a large delegation headed by De Beers’ Chairman Nicky Oppenheimerto the congress.
“The Congress is of great importance to our company, and will provide both De Beers and the DTC with an opportunity to be once again in Israel and communicate with the Israeli industry,” Shine said. “Our group will be sponsoring the Gala Evening and we will also be participating in the congress proceedings with presentations about our Best Business Practices and the Strategic Review of the industry.”
Asked how she sees the future of the Israeli diamond industry, Shine, who began her career in Israel, said: “Israel’s diamantaires are entrepreneurs. They have an international orientation, operate factories in China and India and have created a worldwide distribution network for their goods. Therefore, the Israelis should continue to do what they are doing - being entrepreneurial.”
Mr. Yair Sahar, Chairman of the Congress Organizing Committee, noted that the Congress will deal with the important issues currently affecting the global industry, such as consumer confidence, anti-money laundering and compliance with the Kimberley Process.
Sahar also stressed that the issue of rough diamond supply would be given ample attention. “All the major diamond producers are sending sizable delegations. We hope that this will help the Israeli diamond industry, which always needs additional rough supply. One of our goals is to convince the leading diamond mining companies, such as Aber, Alrosa, BHP and Rio Tinto to copy and implement the DTC’s Diamdel model as it is highly beneficial to the secondary diamond market. For us, the Israeli organizers, this is one of the important, albeit supplementary, goals of the congress.”
