The Union of Israel Postal Service Employees has decided to begin an open-ended strike and not distribute mail in Tel Aviv and central Israel, as part of a protest against a streamlining plan that would see many employees fired.

The decision has halted mail service across the country aside from towns and kibbutzim located near the Gaza Strip.

The Postal Service management recently began implementation of the streamlining plan, which is designed to cut NIS113 million from the company's expenditures.

The plan currently calls for the termination of 130 jobs, but the union says many more employees will wind up being fired. The postal service’s employees announced that they would undertake the measure in protest of the company’s efficiency program, which had come into effect in March.
