Israel and Cyprus will soon sign a Search and Rescue Agreement

The agreement is in view of possible accidents or other actions against oil rigs in their exclusive economic zones.

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis said last week that Cyprus and Israel are expected to sign an agreement on search and rescue, in view of possible accidents or other actions against oil rigs in their exclusive economic zones.

The agreement is expected to be signed by President Christofias and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is due in Nicosia on February 16. Netanyahu will be the first Israeli Prime Minister to visit Cyprus.

Markoullis added: “It is a very important agreement particularly after the launch of exploratory drilling by the Republic of Cyprus and also the drilling already taking place in the exclusive economic zone of Israel.”

The possibility of accidents or other actions against this activity or the oil rigs can be covered through a search and rescue agreement.
