Israel's ‘Apple Diplomacy’ with Damascus

Israel's Defense and Foreign Affairs Ministers approved last week a request made by Agricultural Minister Shalom Simchon for the sale of 500 – 700 tons of apples to Syria.
 
This is the forth straight year that Israeli apple growers have sold their surplus crops to Syria using the United Nations as a go-between. The apples are grown by Druze Arabs on the Golan Heights.
 
The Golan Heights are dotted with large apple plantations on the northern plateau, a crop from which many Israeli and Druze farmers make a good profit. With an elevation of 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) comes a cool climate, perfect for the cultivation of apples, pears, cherries and berries. Golan grapes produce the best wines in Israel.
 
Israel awaits Syria's reply which will be conveyed by the Red Cross.
