The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announced last week that Israel's population at the end of 2006 stands at 7.1 million.

The CBS statement showed that the Israeli population grew at a rate of 1.8% this year, similar to the rate reported in the past three years .76% of the total are Jewish and 20% Arab.

The announcement also noted that in 2006, 19,900 new immigrants arrived in Israel, similar to the number reported in the preceding two years. Almost half of the new immigrants arrived from the CIS countries (former Soviet Union countries).

The CBS pointed out to an important fact : Israel's population is relatively young compared to Western standard, with 28% of the population being under age 14. In most Western countries, children constitute just 17% of the population.

The elderly, however, constitute just 10% of Israel's population, compared to an average of 15% in developed countries.
