The Joint Economic Committee was established in 1994, as mandated by the Paris Protocol. The committee will discuss trade, tax, infrastructure, standards and joint enterprises issues
The Israeli Ministry of Finance said last Wednesday that the Israeli-Palestinian Joint Economic Committee had met Tuesday for the first time in seven years.
In a press release issued by the Israeli Finance Ministry it noted thatMr. Yarom Ariav, director general of the Israeli Finance Ministry, and Salaam Fayad, who currently serves as Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the Palestinian Authority, attended the meeting along with other Israeli and Palestinian Authority government officials and economists.
The Joint Economic Committee was established in 1994, as mandated by the Paris Protocol, signed that year by Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The committee, which is supposed to work on economic cooperation between the two sides, ceased to meet in 2001, when there was a sharp increase in Israeli- Palestinian violence.
The Israeli and Palestinian representatives agreed during the meeting on common topics to discuss in the future, including trade, tax, infrastructure, standards and joint enterprises.
