Police in Israel said last Tuesday that a highly sophisticated drug smuggling ring that operated on an international scale had been uncovered in northern Israel.
Israeli police reported that the smuggling ring involved The Bahamas, Peru and Spain. Israel Police, in cooperation with Peruvian police seized a total of 1.5 tons of cocaine, worth an estimated NIS 2 billion. The bust is considered the biggest ever in Israel and one of the most significant in the world.
Three marine containers have been seized so far. According to Israeli police, drugs were hidden inside industrial machinery and then shipped in containers from Latin America to Europe and the Middle East. The contraband was reportedly seized between October 5 and November 15 as the result of a joint investigation executed by Israeli authorities and various European and South American police forces.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the international drug ring including two in Peru. A Peruvian welder who concealed the drugs and the head of a cargo company who arranged the drugs’ transport have been arrested.
Eight more suspects have been taken in for interrogation, two of which have been arrested and their remand extended by the Haifa Magistrate's court on Tuesday morning.
