The Manufacturers Association of Israel (MAI) reported at the end of last week (the forth week of the war in Lebanon) that 85% of the production capacity in Haifa and the north of Israel were fully or partially open. Only 15% have remained closed due to the war in the north This figure compares with a week before, during which 75% of factories in the north were fully or partially open, and 25% were closed.
In a statement issued late last week by the MAI it noted that during the first week of the war, 65% of factories were fully or partially open, and 35% were closed. There are some 1,850 factories and employers in the Haifa area, and each employs five or more employees. In total, there are more than 100,000 industrial personnel employed in the Haifa area.
The MAI also said that 20 factory-yards or production structures in the north have taken direct hits from Hizbullah "Katyusha" rockets since the start of the war. Damage to factories covers those in the fields of electronics, marble, furnishing, food, plastic, metal and cosmetics
The economic department of the MAI estimates that the direct financial loss to factories in the north, since the outbreak of the crisis at NIS 3.7 billion.
A significant part of the loss was incurred due to the halt in production.
These damages do not include indirect damages due to future orders or customers, and do not include direct physical damage to the factories as a result of Katyusha rockets.
