The National Insurance Institute reported last Wednesday that the year 2010 saw a 14.5% drop in jobless claims compared to 2009.
In a press release the National Insurance Institute noted that the number of unemployment claims was down to a monthly average of 75,832 in 2010 from a monthly average of 88,659 claims in 2009. The monthly average of new claims fell 18% to 14,627 in 2010 from 17,820 in 2009.
The drop in the number of new unemployment claims began in the second half of the year, falling from 19,000 in June to 13,500 in December.
National Insurance Institute director general Esther Dominici said that the sharp drop in jobless claims is "a clear indication of the recovery and emergence from the crisis, and we hope the improvement in the employment field will continue."
