A study by the OECD released last week noted that Israel has ignored the transportation needs of peripheral communities.

The report released by the Macro Center for Political Economics and the Israel branch of Germany’s Friedrich-Ebert- Stiftung development organization, examined Israel’s compliance with recommendations the organization presented the government upon its accession to the OECD a year and a half ago.

According to the report, most of the government's efforts and investment in public transportation center on the Tel Aviv area, with Jerusalem in second place.

The report says that without a public transportation infrastructure the peripheral areas will not be able to share in Israel's economic progress.

For example, the report says, the government allocated in 2010 NIS 939 million for transportation needs in the Jerusalem metropolitan area, while a total of NIS 474 million was allocated for Nazareth, Be'resheva, Netanya, Haifa, and the Sharon region.
