Finance and Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Ehud Olmert met last Wednesday WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy at the trade conference in Hong Kong.
Olmert urged WTO Director-General that Arab states joining the World Trade Organization must follow the precedent set by the Saudi Arabia government and remove all economic boycott on Israel before being allowed to join the organization.
Olmert also emphasized the importance of multilateral trade for the Israeli economy and stressed Israel's key goals in international trade, namely:
- negotiate the reduction of customs & duties on industrial goods
- liberalization in the trade of computer hardware and computer programming services.
- reach balanced agricultural agreements.
Olmert also stressed that Israel favors further reductions of import duties on industrial goods, as well as the removal of other non tariff barriers to industrial trade. He added that "Israel has assumed integration in globalization as a strategic goal".
Olmert also added that agricultural produce and industrial goods are the main focus of interest for the Israeli industry and the economy.
