The economic and planning department at the Tax Authority reported last week that 18,025 motor vehicles were imported to Israel in August 2010, compared to 12,064 in the corresponding month last year, up 49%.
 
It should be noted, however, that in August 2009 car import was particularly low following July's record month during which import was high prior to the introduction of the "green taxation”.
 
The report also noted that during January 2010 to August 2010, 143,483 passenger car were imported compared to 118,902 during the corresponding period, up 21%.
 
The report alsonoted that during August, import of durable goods slowed down. Import of refrigerators was down 3%, washing machines 2.2%, dryers 16.5% and dishwashers down 5%. Import of videos and D.V.D went down dramatically by 41%. TV import was up 5.3%.
 
Total import for August was US$4.6 billion, an increase of 13% compared to August 2009. Import for the eight month period, January to August 2010, was up 20% compared to the corresponding period last year.
