President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to visit Israel in October this year, making it the maiden trip by an Indian Head of State to Israel.

Mukherjee plans to begin his Middle East trip on Oct. 9. According to Indian media reports, his first stop will be Jordan, followed by the Palestinian Authority. He will then arrive in Israel.

Although India recognized Israel in 1950, it had not established “full” diplomatic relationship with the Jewish state until 1992, and with no Indian Prime Minister or President having visited Israel, the upcoming trip is seen as an historic step.

Trade between India and Israel has grown substantially over the years as well, from US$200 million in 1992 to roughly US$4.39 billion in 2013.
