Israel approves dry food import reform

The Israeli cabinet has approved the opening up of the food import market to parallel imports.

The move is expected to dramatically increase competition and reduce prices to the consumer.

The reform will involve dry goods such as pasta, rice, and cereal and will not include sensitive goods like meat, milk products, baby food or foods that there is a concern about their freshness.

The list of sensitive foods will be periodically updated as needed. The decision was taken following an agreement between Israel and the EU, under which Israel will adopt the European system of food imports. Under this system, imports of non-sensitive foods will be unrestricted, provided that they meet predetermined standards.
