In a water technology conference held last week in Jerusalem Mr. Ehud Ulmert the Minister of Industry and Trade said that Government should give priority to the development of the water technology sector in order that Israel should become a leader in the global water technology market.

In a message to the participants Ulmert argued that water technology was of utmost importance to the economy and that water should be regarded as the crude oil if the 21st century.

Ulmert emphasized that the Ministry was about to embark upon an investment program which would later be approved by the Government to increase investment in water technology projects.

Mr. Raanan Dinur director general of the Ministry of Industry and trade said at the conference that an initiative by the Mekorot national water company to establish a water technology incubator called Watech could provide a major boost in the field.

Mekorot, Israel national water corporation, believes in Israeli technology and its ability to tap into the growing demand in the world water technologies market. WaTech has been established by Mekorot to help promote Israel’s water-related technologies.

Dinur added that the aim is to use Israel’s national water corporation as a platform for turning Israel into a hub for world water-related technology and launching Israeli companies on the world market.

Mekorot is offering its 3,000 sites in Israel to water startups for beta testing.
