Mr. Shlomo Sharon Chairman of the National Federation of Israeli International Freight Forwarders & Customs Clearing Agents complained last week about unusual traffic delays at the Nitzana Border Crossing.
The Nitzana Border Crossing, an international crossing that connects Al Uja, Egypt and Nitzana, Israel is the only land crossing serving commercial trade between the two nations. The terminal is open from Sunday to Thursday, 8:00 to 17:00. It is closed from Friday to Saturday as well as Jewish and Islamic holidays.
Mr. Sharon sent an angry letter to Mr.Yehuda Nassardishi, director general of Israel's tax authority claiming that the long delays were the result of lack of manpower at the Customs post thus delaying traffic and creating heavy financial damage to traders on both sides of the border.
Sharonnoted that customs inefficiencies at the border crossing harm the bilateral trade which serve the highly successful QIZ agreement between the two countries. The delays, Sharon said, may bring about cancellations of orders at a high costs to the Israeli manufacturers.
