Israel Aerospace Industries, Israel’s biggest defense contractor is getting into mass transit, building the world’s first aerial maglev to carry people in egg-like pods around its campus at 44 mph.

SkyTran Inc., the designer of an elevated Personal Rapid Transit, announced on June 23 that was partnering with Israel Aerospace Industries to start construction of a demonstration system of its technology on IAI’s corporate campus in Lod, Israel.

SkyTran is a personal rapid transit system that features two-person pods hanging from elevated maglev tracks. SkyTran created a patented, high-speed, elevated, levitating, energy-efficient transportation that is a system of computer-controlled, two-person jet-like vehicles connected to a track through magnetic levitation technology.

The network will allow passengers to bypass traffic and travel in a safe and fast manner. After it completes the demonstration system with IAI, skyTran intends to build its system for commercial use in Tel Aviv.

The project is projected to take 24 months, which, allowing for various government approvals, is projected to start in the fourth quarter of 2016. Construction costs are estimated at $80 million and the initial project will be just phase one of what will later be a network covering more than 125 miles or 200 kilometers in urban and suburban areas in central Israel.
