Ashdod port company reported last week a 13.7% increase in incoming container traffic in January-July 2006.

The company also reported NIS 565.7 million revenue in January-July 2006, 16.7% more than the NIS 484.4 million reported in the parallel period of 2005. the report also pointed out 4.3% increase in full containers exported in TEU terms and 9.3% overall growth compared to the corresponding period in 2005.

During the reported period 45 passenger ships arrived, carrying 50,909 tourists - an increase of 65% compared to the corresponding period last year (30,833).

Ashdod Port chairperson Iris Stark who presented the report noted that the sharp increase in container movement was mainly due to the limited activity forced on Haifa port during the month of July, because of the war in the north, which disrupted almost all port activities.

Stark noted that since activity at the country's largest maritime port in Haifa were literally frozen due to Hizbullah Karyusha rockets, the number of containers unloaded at Ashdod port, between July 17 and 29, was 35% higher than the average volume of traffic during the first six months of the year.

Stark added that the sharp increase in revenue was also the result of many efforts invested by port workers to improve efficiency and better customer service.
