Ashdod Port two days strike ended with a new government approved labor contract

The workers agreed to relinquish their demands for control over outsourcing contracts, as well as their demand that the workers' committee handle all discipline problems

Ashdod employees held a surprise walk-out early last week, resulting in a halt to the loading and unloading of ships & cargoes in the port.

Following the announcement by the port labor committee, to bring to a halt all port operations, the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce (FICC) issued a press release indicating that the damage caused by the strike was over NIS 100 million, FICC noted that scores of loaded containers with goods for Passover were stuck at Ashdod Port and that the longer the strike continued, the greater the damage to sales of these goods.

Work resumed at the Ashdod port on Wednesday morning after representatives of the Finance Ministry, Ashdod Port Authority, Manufacturer Association of Israel and Histadrut came to an agreement whereby the Ministry of Finance approved the labor contract at the port.

Ashdod Port Company CEO Shuky Sagis welcomed the end of the strike and the workers return to full work.

The workers agreed to relinquish their demands for control over outsourcing contracts, as well as their demand that the workers' committee handle all discipline problems, agreeing to handle only performance-related issues.

The agreement includes promises of some industrial peace. The workers promised to uphold the agreement they signed in 2005 in which they agreed to a period of five years of "industrial quiet."

It is understood that the Government Companies Authority director Eyal Gabbai and Ministry of Finance Director of Wages, Eli Cohen were ultimately satisfied with an addendum to the labor agreement, which the General Federation of Labor in Israel and AshdodPort management called “minor”.
