Delays at the construction Haifa's new Carmel port

Ministry of Environmental Protection said that the decision to delay work was taken after it was found that waste was dumped in the Haifa harbor instead of the designated site
 
The Ministry of Environment called early this week a halt to work being carried out on the expansion of Haifa Port's new Carmel port.
 
A spokesman for the Ministry of Environment said that the decision to delay work at the site was taken after it was found that the waste created at the site was being dumped in the Haifa harbor instead of in the designated site at sea
 
The spokesman added that an inspector of the ministry had noticed that the barge which should have been offloading the excavated soil and waste out at sea was dumping it within the port area.
 
The soil and waste being excavated at the site is believed to be contaminated.
 
It is understood that the Ministry of Environmental Protection sent a letter to Ports Development and assets company CEO Shlomo Breiman, warning that the ministry would be carrying out a review of all the excavation work and waste tipping at the Carmel project and at other port development projects carried out by Israel Ports Development & Assets Company.
