Last week Zim diverted 5 ships to the port and will now increase the number to 7 ships
Zim CEO Doron Goder agreed last week to divert more of the company's ships to the port of Haifa despite continuous deadly missile attacks on the port area.
Israel's port of Haifa, one of the country's key shipment points, was opened last week but was not providing full loading and unloading services because of the threat of more Hizbollah rocket attacks from Lebanon.
The decision was made public following the request made by the manufacturers association to assist its exporters with their exports shipment.
Last week Zim diverted 5 ships to the port and will now increase the number to 7 ships.
Mr. Zvi Plada, chairman of the manufacturers association transport committee, noted in a press release that the decision will increase the available shipping capacity which had been reduced by 15% due to the hostilities in the north.
Plada added that the decision taken by Zim show a sense of national responsibility and forward looking. He noted that should hostilities continue, more ships will be diverted to the port of Ashdod which will have to increase its labour force to handle growing quantities of cargo.
He also noted that continuous efforts made by the Ashdod port workers had doubled the port's capacity, which reduces the damage to Israeli exports and imports. But it may not be enough.
