Members of the Europe/Mediterranean Trade Agreement (EMTA) advised last week that following a review of conditions in the port of Ashdod, member lines had detected an improvement in productivity in port operations.

Accordingly, Lines advised that the Congestion Surcharge of $15 per TEU, $1.00 W/M LCL would be temporarily suspended with effect from January 1, 2007 for a period of one month. A further review will take place thereafter.

Lines will continue to monitor closely the performance and productivity in the port and reserve the right to reactivate the surcharge in the future should the situation deteriorate.

Mr. Gad Schaefer, the Israel Shippers' Council chairman complained last week to the Prime Minister as well as to the Ministers of Finance, Transport and Trade & Industry demanding the government to intervene in order to prevent heavy losses due to continuous labor disputes and inability of the trade unions to keep stable labor relations at the port.
